Important - Please Read

Dear Parents / Friends,
As most of you are aware of the current tragedy at Penn State University, I felt it very important to discuss the situation and since I wanted to make sure everybody hears what I have to say, this is the best form of communication.

Firstly, I am sure we can all agree that what happened is atrocious and inexcusable. With that said, the point of my letter is to stress my concerns with the coach / player relationship. As my salutation states, you are not only the parents of my players, but also friends of mine. Nothing I or any other coach/teacher can say to you will ever completely put your mind at ease. So I won’t preach.

However, I am imploring you to have a talk with your child about the relationship they have with adults in power (teachers, coaches etc). Stress to them the importance of talking to you about anything that happens that makes them feel uncomfortable and never hiding anything from you. Explain to them that no matter what threat is given to them for speaking up, that you, as their parents, will always be there. They have to trust you. Please understand that I am not telling you how to raise your children. I just can’t stress enough how important this topic is to me and it took these tragedies in Pennsylvania to occur in order for me to broach this with you.

I’ve been around hundreds of kids between coaching youth soccer and hockey as well as high school hockey and track and field and I’ve treated every child as they were my own. What happened at Penn State is tragic and I would die if that happened to my children. That includes my hockey players and their siblings – YOUR CHILDREN. Kiss them good night and remind them how much you love them.

Coach Scott
