By now I’m sure everybody has stepped back into everyday life. Although I’m back to work and the kids are back to school, the reality of what we did in Ottawa hasn’t fully sunk in yet. What we accomplished this past weekend is something the boys (and adults) will never forget. We are the first Kings team ever to be crowned champions at the prestigious Bell Capital Cup. Memories were created that will last a lifetime.

We said at the beginning of the year we were going to push the boys to the limit and then some. And this weekend was the true test. Our theme for the tournament was the quest to climb Mt Everest. We approached each game like the climbers prepare to ascend to each camp on their way to the summit. These boys were asked to skate in four games and compete in a skills competition in a 25 hour period in order to win the championship and they did it with eagerness and without complaint. They fought through the pain and survived on adrenaline alone. We couldn’t have been more proud of how they responded.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this trip a success. The parents came together as a team, just like the boys. From loading the bus, to watching the boys, coordinating events, getting food, sharpening skates and keeping order, everybody played their part and we want to personally thank everyone for their effort. We could not have gotten as far as we did without everyone’s help. The welcoming committee at Skylands was also very special. The boys felt like heroes for a day! Thank you to everyone – it was amazing!!!!

Curtain falls on successful 2013 Bell Capital Cup
OTTAWA, ONTARIO—(Marketwire – Jan. 1, 2013) – The 14th annual Bell Capital Cup, the world’s premier atom and peewee hockey tournament, came to a successful conclusion on Tuesday evening with the final eight championship games played at Scotiabank Place.
The 380 participating teams were vying for the Allen J. MacDonald Memorial Trophy, which was bestowed upon each division champion. This year’s field is comprised of teams from five different countries, including Canada (three provinces and one territory), China (Hong Kong), Finland, Germany and the United States (with representation from nine individual states).
The Allen J. MacDonald Memorial Trophy symbolizes the teamwork, dedication and effort required for success. The four-foot trophy is named in honour of Allen J. MacDonald, a friend, colleague and passionate member of the minor hockey community, who was a great contributor to the Bell Capital Cup. Each winning team will take home a replica trophy and a championship banner for display in its home arena. Each player will receive a gold miniature championship trophy and a Bell Capital Cup Nike shirt.

Bill Patterson Trophy winners
The Bill Patterson Trophy is awarded to the two teams (one house league, one competitive) that best demonstrate fair play and sportsmanship by recording the fewest penalty minutes during round-robin play. A sportscaster for CTV Ottawa, Patterson died suddenly of a heart attack on Sept. 22, 1999. An active family man who is survived by his wife, Pat, and daughters Sherri, Meghan and Sarah, Patterson loved watching and reporting on young athletes, and was Ottawa’s primary booster of amateur sports.
The 2013 recipients of the Bill Patterson Trophy are:

Bell Sensplex Hockey School scholarships
The Bell Sensplex Hockey School scholarships are presented to one player from each team that is awarded the Bill Patterson Trophy. The 2013 recipients are the South Grenville Rangers C1 (boys atom house B) and the Kanata Blazers (boys major peewee A). Winning coaches select a player from their team who best demonstrates hard work, fair play and good sportsmanship. The scholarship recipients will spend a week receiving the very best in on-ice instruction from the professional staff at the Ottawa Senators Summer Hockey Camps, held annually at the Bell Sensplex during July and August.
